Blacksburg Blues

someday it will be like all the others
a date and a story of once upon a time
we will acknowledge things
that happen are very bad
we will say that once America was
beautiful
that there was once a dream
that held folks together
it stopped a war
it became color blind
and came to understand
about difference

we will again bury the young
the youth and the future
in cemeteries across this land
out in Blacksburg it has darkened
to the tremendous depth of blue
we will mention words like
Columbine and Kent State,
Vietnam and terrorism, new catch
phrases about weapons
and old debates about amendment rights
while justice lays in a bath of blood
and silence remains a steed

who will you be? the advocate or apologist?
who will you ask to believe you; you unaffected
victims, you who stand to be listened to?
will we see it in God’s hands? will we see the childless
Christmases and Passovers
or the dry playgrounds and the empty bedrooms
photographs locked in closets and trophies stained
who will you be when the words Blacksburg or even
April 16th are said will you have to be reminded
after all the prayers that follow
and the tragedy insists
waiting for someday

Nappy Headed Ho’s

Ah, where do I start?

The news was so big this week they killed Don Ho.

The irony is this week is that we may have possibly done the right thing for once; got rid of a ‘jerk’ in the workplace.

Next I suggest Howard Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge and Rush Limbaugh and well any garden variety sort of conservative radio and a lot of people on ESPN.

The bigger question comes to outrage in our society. This is a nice tipping point.

We didn’t like a comment; well in a few minutes Dick Cheney will be speaking his insanity on CBS. We have people who are out and out lying and abusing power firing people because they are prosecuting trumped up charges on a perceived enemy? When they refuse to answer questions will someone ask, ‘Are you invoking your 5th Amendment Right?’

Then we have the abuse of … and then we have the abuse of …

Here is my statement for today…

Find a mirror and look into it… and ask these questions

“How stupid am I?”
“Why does this or doesn’t this bother me?”
“Do I treat others as I wish to be treated?”

There are children being molested…
There are narcotics being sold…
There is a culture of hate and loss and…that war that is going on…

When do we care and what do we care about, will this change anyone; least of all the hatless Don Imus?

Make a difference… take this opportunity for each and every thing that is wrong… fix it, speak up… have courage…don’t wait for the leadership…
